Old Bugs - Can't Use "URL_Rewrite" Mod...

MrWizard [ Sat 02 Sep, 2006 03:29 ]
Post subject: Can't Use "URL_Rewrite" Mod...
I tried to use it and all I get are 404 errors... Hmm...Seems like the pages aren't being generated.
I have tried it with and without PHP Reg Globals enbaled and with and without Apache mod_rewrite enabled.
I not sure what I am doing wrong. I would be most grateful for any help.

Are you sure that you have the correct HTACCESS in your root?

Now you got me... This is the HTACCESS file that I have. Please tell me if it is correct. I have not changed anything in it.

Thanks one last thing. How should I have my Apache and PHP settings for this to work?

register_globals on or off?
mod_rewrite enabled or disabled?

Both are currently turned off.

Here you are...

register_globals => OFF
mod_rewrite => ON

Thanks for the fast response! I have them set that way and still not working.
The only changes I made to the HTACCESS that you posted was the following. Was I wrong in doing this?

#Make sure the whole site goes to www.mysite.com instead of mysite.com. This is good for the search engines
#Edit and uncomment the below lines for your own site.
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^mrwizard516.com
RewriteRule (.*) http://www.mrwizard516.com/$1 [R=301,L]

Thanks again for you help.

It seems that your server doesn't recognize correctly the address.

Try to check again your HTACCESS and that REWRITE ENGINE is ON.

No, it shouldn't affect this... it's very strange... the problem is in the HTACCESS and in the way your server is interpreting it.

Would the fact that I am running my server on Win XP Pro and not Linux have something to do with it?

I don't know... it should depend only to the REWRITE ENGINE and HTACCESS...

Sorry but I haven't any other idea at the moment...

MG Thanks for trying to help me but I figured out the problem by mistake. For some reason the rewrite mod doesn't seem to work with sub directories.

my site was http://www.mrwizard516.com/forum/ I changed it to http://www.mrwizard516.com/ and now it works perfectly.

He he he... maybe you had just to change your base root...

Code: [Hide]
  1. #This may cause isues with subdirs and so I have not enabled it.
  2. #RewriteBase /

But what is important is that you have fixed it...

Just for knowledge... you may even try to adjust the BASE path if you wish... and then let me know!

I think you might have misunderstood me or if you didn't I'll explain just incase someone else comes across this problem.
What I meant was that my original path was as follows:

I had my server setup where my home directory was
C:/xampp/htdocs/forum.
I moved everything from the /forum folder into /htdocs so the new path reads
C:/xampp/htdocs

One minor question. Which is better for a server, Windows XP Pro or SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 10?

Post subject: Re: SOLVED -Can't Use "URL_Rewrite" Mod...
No I don't think I misunderstood... that option is meant to change the root path of your forum!

Anyway, what is important is that you have solved your issue.

Regarding the server, I don't really know... but I think Linux is better...

Thanks for the reply.
I was using Suse Linux 10 but ran into problems trying to get some features to work, so I switched back to Windows XP. I am currently waiting for a copy of Suse Linux Enterprise Desktop 10 to come in. Maybe when I get it I could pick you brain for a little help. I am not really familiar with Linux so I could use all the help that I could get.
